An Italian woman decided to marry herself and organized a ceremony which included 70 guests, white dress, bridesmaids and three-layer wedding cake.

“I strongly believe that all of us first of all need to love ourselves,” claimed Laura Mesi, a 40-year-old fitness trainer. “All of us can have a fairytale, and there doesn’t have to be a prince.”

This ceremony is actually illegal. But nowadays there is a growing trend of self-marriage – known as “sologamy” – practiced in many different countries around the world.

Promoters of such weddings say that it’s all about self-acceptance and self-love, and maintaining the social affirmations generally reserved for couples who wed.

Laura told us that she came up with the idea of a solo wedding two years ago when she ended a 12-year relationship with her boyfriend.

“I promised myself and my family that I would marry myself if I had not found “the right one” by my 40th birthday,” – she told La Repubblica newspaper.

“I’ll be really happy if one day I find a man with whom I can make plans for the future, but my happiness doesn’t depend on him.”

It’s interesting that Ms Mesi is the first Italian woman to organize a solo wedding. In May 2017, a man Nello Ruggiero organized a solo ceremony in Naples.

In 2014 a Japan travel agency started to offer bridal ceremonies for single women.

The first person to marry herself was Linda Baker in 1993. She has inspired the writers of so many books and was used as a theme of episodes of Glee and Sex and the City.

In the US, there is a website named I Married Me that offers self-wedding kits. In Canada, there is an agency named Marry Yourself Vancouver which is opened for more than a year and promotes solo weddings as a result of the growing number of single people.

However, there are many people who harshly criticize this trend and regard it as pointless and insane.

There are so many comments left on Ms Mrsi’s wedding photos that show the people’s disproval of this trend. Some say that it is very sad; others have even written that there is something wrong with her brain and that she has lost her mind.

Ms Mesi doesn’t really care about those comments and says that there is nothing in this world that can turn off her smile.

However, in some of the interviews she admitted that not everyone is ready for a solo wedding. “To say ‘yes’ to yourself, she says, first of all you need the support of your family, then you need a certain amount of money and, of course, you have to be a little bit crazy too.”

What’s your opinion about this growing “sologamy” trend?
